B: Brand Documentary Magazine #61 Explores Acne Studios
B: Brand Documentary Magazine is a publication that introduces one specific well-balanced brand from around the world in each issue. The team selects each brand based on four standards: beauty, practicality, price and philosophy, and each issue is packed with B’s unique insights and in-depth analysis. From brand managers to people who want to learn about brand marketing and management, B is for everyone who plans to start a business or has an interest in brands. B: Brand Documentary Magazine's 61st issue features Acne Studios, a brand that has been at the forefront of change, not just within the fashion industry but in the creative scene as a whole.
Founded in 1996 by Jonny Johansson and three partners, with only 10,000 euros, Acne was first launched as a small advertising and design agency in Stockholm. One day, the company produced just 100 pairs of jeans to emerge as Stockholm’s representative denim brand. In 2006, Acne separated its fashion endeavors to create an independent brand called Acne Studios, and since then has consolidated its position as a major contemporary fashion house that crosses between the realms of fashion, culture and art.
The fashion house specialises in men's and women's ready-to-wear fashion, footwear, accessories and denim. Founder and Creative Director Jonny Johannson's interest in photography, art, architecture and contemporary culture has helped Acne Studios to become a respected creator of clothing, publications, furniture, exhibitions and special collaborations.
In the OPINION piece the team speak to Bom Lee (the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of a fashion magazine) about successful brands and icons within the fashion industry, the atmospheres at Acne Studio fashion shows, the brand’s history, culture and philosophy, and Acne Studio’s role and position in today’s fashion scene. There are two other OPINION pieces within this issue featuring Conde Nast’s Video Producer Zoe Michel, and Acne Studio’s in-house Architect Andreas Fornell.
The IMPRESSION piece focuses on key areas of the brand including naming, logotype, the brand’s signature “Acne Pink” colour, and the brand’s bi-annual publication Acne Paper.
The KEY ITEMS feature highlights Acne Studio’s signature pieces —tailored with a fine level of detail these items have distinguished the label from other contemporary fashion brands. Categories include denim, sweat shirt, biker jacket, shearling jacket, boots, leather goods, collaborations, basic coat, and a selection of Acne Studio’s runway looks spanning 2012 - 2018.
The SPACE feature documents some of Acne Studio’s stores in 22 cities around the globe. Though the stores share a similar basic layout and tend to use common basic materials, each overall image is completely transformed by the architects and designers who take part in designing the spaces. A selection of these spaces and the work of these designers are featured here.
The BRAND STORY article documents the history of the company, and driving forces behind the “cool” fashion house. Also featured are a selection of Acne Studio’s advertising campaigns, brand collaborations and information about Founder Jonny Johansson.
