The tiny centre, fittingly located around the corner from what was once Amsterdam’s own Fleet Street, offers newspapers in every conceivable language, as well as international periodicals from the most outré fanzine to the latest fashion glossy. It also stocks a fine line in music, design and travel books, and runs a blog in English on its latest arrivals.

2. BERLIN DO YOU READ ME?
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'WHEN WE THINK OF BERLIN'
With dark grey walls and matching slate floor, the stark interior provides a neutral backdrop to the shop’s hundreds of magazines, each one designed to catch the eye and demand attention. The range is enormous; seemingly every modish, niche title is here, from modest fanzines to doorstep-thick fashion magazines.

3. GLASGOW VOLTAIRE & ROUSSEAU
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'A GLASGOW COMPANION'
The chaotic nature of this second-hand bookshop, with its rows of teetering stacks and recumbent cats, encourages browsing and rewards an open mind. You may not locate the book you came in for, but you’ll probably find something you wanted.

4. HAMBURG KUNSTANTIQUARIAT JOACHIM LUHRS
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'AUTHENTICALLY HAMBURG'
In a grand canalside building, this high end, pleasingly cluttered rare bookshop is a wonderful place to browse. There are maps, posters, prints, art and photography books casually scattered in stacks and on shelves, with some items dating back hundreds of years. Look out for neat piles of old magazines, among them copies of rare 1960s editions of Nova and Vogue, and still more prized, Twen, a highly influential German title that lasted from 1959 to 1970.

6. LONDON FOYLES BOOKSTORE
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'LONDON ADDRESS BOOK'
One of the best known and best loved names in bookselling is flourishing in its second century. Founded in 1903, Foyles flagship store is in lavish new premises, a bold yet sympathetic reworking of the old Central St Martin’s art school building. The space is light and airy, with intimate nooks for browsing and rummaging. Their stock, on four miles of shelves, is both broad and deep, with all genres and multiple languages catered. Dip into your purchases in the top floor café.

7. LONDON DAUNT BOOKS
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'LONDON ADDRESS BOOK'

8. LONDON JOHN SANDOE BOOKS
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'LONDON ADDRESS BOOK'
Anyone seeking the DNA of a classic bookshop from which to cultivate their own might wish to chip loose a sliver of paint from this paragon of the type. Arranged across three little houses over three cramped floors, it is both intimate and rambling, with every conceivable space employed for the display and storage of books of every type, their quality being a shared characteristic.

10. PARIS LIBRAIRIE GALERIE LOUIS ROZEN
AS FEATURED IN HERB LESTER'S 'IT'S NICE TO BE ALONE IN PARIS'
Illustration is the theme here, from the 18th century to present day, taking in psychedelic posters, underground comics, mid-century advertising annuals, beat novels and children’s books. We are unable to improve upon the owners’ own description of their shop as “cabinet de curiosités” to which, they say, you need bring just two things: time and spectacles. We would add a third essential requirement, and that’s money to spend.
