The 2020 Stendig Wall Calendar
It would be difficult to write a post on the beautiful Stendig wall calendar without first giving some insight into the life of Massimo Vignelli — the extraordinary Italian graphic designer that designed this piece in 1966. Vignelli was responsible for some of the last century’s most enduring designs, including the signage of the New York City Subway System, the American Airlines brand identity, work for Knoll International, IBM and Bloomingdale. He designed graphic systems that had (and to this day still have) a huge benefit for millions of people.
His ethos was, “If you can design one thing, you can design everything,” and this was reflected in the broad range of his work. In 2009 Vignelli released a free downloadable copy of his book 'The Vignelli Canon'. It contains a large selection of Vignelli's guidelines and is recommended reading if you would like to find out more about his life and work.
Vignelli was well known for his use of only a select few timeless typefaces including Times New Roman, Futura, Century, Bodoni and of course Helvetica — the typeface he has been most identified with and the typeface used throughout the Stendig calendar. The calendar was commissioned by Charles Stendig, the owner of the Stendig Furniture Company — a company that imported and produced iconic furniture pieces. Vignelli designed the calendar in 1966 during his time at Unimark International. That very year it was taken into the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The Stendig’s minimal and timeless design has been a favourite with the design-conscious for over fifty years. It is most appropriate for vintage or 21st century distinguished homes and business environments. Many designers select this calendar for their clients (both residential and commercial), when their designs are modern, contemporary, retro and vintage. Since the design is classic, it also incorporates into interior spaces with more traditional elements.
The calendar has twelve sheets of paper bound together at the top with a black strip. Each month varies between a white and black background. The sheets are perforated along a line just under the binding strip to allow them to be torn away. Removed sheets are great for wrapping gifts and other craft projects. The binding strip of the calendar has three matte black finish metal eyelets to facilitate easy hanging.
